POLISHED CONCRETE
With a vast range of flooring options to choose from today, the options are endless, so why choose polished concrete?
When treated, concrete is a very durable, long lasting, low maintenance and very cost-effective flooring option. When polishing your concrete, it actually seals the surface causing it to be far denser than its original state, enabling it to repel water, oil and other surface contamination.
Not only is a polished concrete floor difficult to damage and stain but it is also very easy to keep clean and the finish lasts the test of time. With the densified concrete being easy to clean (due to it naturally repelling liquids and dirt) it creates a clean and hygienic environment for you and your family to live in.
The great advantage of polished concrete is its life span. With no real maintenance, polished concrete can last a very long time but if small amounts of maintenance are carried out over the years, a polished concrete surface can last you a lifetime. For example; carpet flooring is recommended that you have it professionally cleaned every 12 months, but overtime the carpet will begin to wear down, lose its fibres and texture making it harder to keep clean and maintain. Most carpet manufacturers recommend to replace your carpet after 10 years. But if your polished concrete is maintained occasionally, it can literally last you for decades.
Not only is a polished concrete surface a durable, stain resistant, easy to maintain, hygienic and cost-effective option, it also looks amazing. The aesthetics of a polished concrete surface has become more popular over the years due to its neutrality and architectural appearance. Concrete and aggregate are natural materials, no two polished concrete surfaces are ever the same, making your home one of a kind.
There are three main options for polished concrete, non-exposed, semi exposed and fully exposed as listed below.
NON EXPOSED
A non exposed concrete floor is where the slab is lightly honed over to make the surface smooth and flat while not breaking through the slurry topping layer so no aggregate is exposed. The slab is then densified or sealed and finished to the desired sheen level. Once complete you are left with a durable and hard-wearing floor with a more industrial style look. This is also referred to as “burnished concrete”.
SEMI EXPOSED
Semi exposed concrete is achieved with a process of honing the slab with a series of diamond discs working through a multi-step process until the top of the aggregate is slightly exposed. The concrete is then grouted to fill all pin holes and hair line cracks and then densified. Once the level of exposure is achieved it is then buffed with a multi-step process of diamond pads until the specific sheen level has been achieved. A semi exposed surface shows 25-35% of the concretes aggregate leaving a more subtle polished concrete surface.
FULLY EXPOSED
Fully exposed concrete is achieved with the same process as semi exposed except the process is taken that step further. While using the same multi step process the surface is ground down to a deeper level until the aggregate is fully exposed. The same process of adding compounds and working through the buffing process is carried out until the desired finished is achieved. Fully exposed is your more traditional polished concrete that will leave you with an architectural and high end look that is durable and hard wearing lasting you for years to come.
